First round matches

Valencia and Barcelona qualified for the UEFA cup as Spain's fifth and sixth placed sides in the league, and Mallorca joined them as Spanish cup winners. Villarreal also made it into the competition for the first time in their history after winning one of the finals of the Intertoto cup. All four won their ties and to go through to the second round.
