Barcelona ended their goal drought in one fell swoop, hitting eight against a poor Puchov side who appeared to only be in Spain on a shirt-swapping mission. With a 1-1 scoreline from the first leg, Rijkaard couldn't afford to take chances, and he put out a strong side. He did find room though for Rüstü and Gabri to make their first official appearances of the season, although Márquez was left in the stands reportedly as a punishment for criticising his manager earlier in the week.

Ronaldinho was doubtful right up to the last minute, but he made the starting line up and within twenty minutes had got his name on the scoresheet twice, cleverly lifting a shot over the defence after Saviola's shot was blocked (the referee waving away appeals for a positional offside of the Argentine striker), and then volleying the ball back into the net from the edge of the area after Gabri crossed in and Motta's first shot was blocked.

After that it was all Barça, but nobody seemed able to get that final touch. Finally though Motta did beat Bernady with a curling free kick, and by half time the tie was effectively over. Rijkaard started to think about resting some of his players for next Saturday's match with Deportivo, but before he could, Ronaldinho had completed a classy hat-trick and then set up Luis Enrique for his side's fifth.

The Brazilian went off to a standing ovation from a rain-sodden crowd, and his replacement Iniesta promptly picked out Saviola for him to score his first goal of the season. The relief on his face was obvious, and two minutes later it was the much criticised Luis Enrique's turn to smile as he drove home Barcelona's seventh. After that the game slowed down a bit, but there was still time for Saviola to make it eight after a delightful chipped pass from Gerard. The result should restore Barça's confidence for their league campaign, but the real proof will come next Saturday and Deportivo will not be as generous as the Slovakians.
