Luis Aragonés
returned to Mallorca to take over from Jaime Pacheco, and saw his side come
from behind to beat Apoel Nicosia 4-2. The veteran manager was in charge at the
San Moix stadium a couple of seasons ago and took his team into the Champions
League, and the new management were hoping he can do the same for them this
year. His first task though was to keep them in the UEFA cup, not a difficult
task given their 1-2 victory on the first leg in Cyprus.
With little time to plan,
Aragonés opted for a line up similar to the one put out by caretaker
manager Tomeu Llompart at the weekend. But their was consternation at the
beginning as the visitors mastered the wet pitch and took the lead early on,
the defence allowing Okkarides too much time to control a cross in and shoot
over the top of the defence.
After a few shaky moments
Mallorca did recover though, and Eto'o got on the end of Campano's low cross to
turn the ball in past Morphis. A goal from the visitors could still have caused
problems, but eventually Eto'o put the fans' minds at rest, finishing off a
good run from Nené and then six minutes later running through to slide
in his hat-trick midway through the second half.
Aragonés took off the
Camerooni striker soon afterwards to a standing ovation, and brought on two
fresh men up front. And in a repetition of Eto'o's second goal, Nené
found Correa for him to score his fourth goal in a week. The Spaniards did let
in another late goal from Amanatidis as they took their foot off the
accelerator, but by then the game was over and Luis had his first win in
charge. And next Sunday Mallorca visit his old club Atlético. The fun is
just beginning. |
