Villarreal made it through to the second round of the competition after a thrilling tie against Trabzonspor in Turkey. Having drawn the first leg 0-0, Benito Floro's side had to score to qualify, and the manager put out an attacking line up with José Marí, Víctor and Riquelme all in the side. Wearing black arm-bands in memory of the 62 Spanish soldiers killed in an air crash in Turkey earlier in the year, the visitors controlled the early minutes and went close to scoring when Guayre shot into the side netting. However Mehmet could have put the Turks ahead shortly before the break if the Villarreal defence had not closed him down in time.

Floro decided to make a change at half time and brought on Sonny Anderson, a move which proved to be well founded as the Brazilian striker rose to head home Guayre's cross on the hour mark. It was the Spanish side's first goal in the UEFA cup, and it was not long before they got a second, Riquelme working his way to the by-line and playing the ball back for José Marí to steer a shot wide of the keeper.

It seemed to be all over, but Goldenik scrambled one back with a quarter of an hour to go and Tekke made it all square seven minutes from the end. Villarreal were still through on the away goal rule, but another goal from the locals and they would be out. The crowd got behind their side as they threw everything forward, but much to the relief of Floro and his staff, José Marí took advantage of the gaps they left at the back to charge through and score again. That was the end, and the "Yellow Submarine" sail on into unchartered waters.
