The fat lady has left her
throat spray at home and has had to turned back! The second division was thrown
wide open as none of the top six won and the three teams following all did.
Nobody seems to want to go up this year, and right now any three from nine
could do so with three matches remaining. Las Palmas are still favourites
despite being hammered 4-1 by an Eibar side fighting for survival. They keep a
three point lead over Villarreal, who were surprised to find that their 1-1
home draw with Compostela actually improved their position, moving two points
away from Osasuna and Extremadura. They only just did it however, with a last
minute equaliser from Javi Gracia. Osasuna lost 2-1 away to a Levante side who
now move to within two points of them. Although their top scorer Salillas has
been banned until the end of the season, Israel and Tomás stepped in to
turn around Alfredo's early goal. Extremadura couldn't even beat bottom club
Toledo in their own ground. They went down 1-2, with Rueda making the score
look a bit more respectable with a late goal. Salamanca lost their opportunity
to move into the top three, losing 1-0 to Albacete, and Lleida were held to a
0-0 draw at Badajoz. Sporting Gijon and Mérida were the other two
winners on the night, winning 3-1 against Atlético Madrid B and 0-3 at
Recreativo respectively. David scored two for Mérida in the first half.
The two move up level with Levante on 58 points. Down at the bottom, Toledo are
still not mathematically relegated after their victory at Extremadura, but they
will need an extraordinary series of results to survive being seven points
adrift of the rest. With Atlético Madrid automatically relegated, the
remaining two spots look like being between Recreativo (42 points),
Logroñes (43), Compostela (44) and Getafe (45).
