Once again there were several
surprises in the Spanish cup. Last year's champions Valencia brought back
Santiago Cañizares in goal, but in the end lost 3-0 to second division
Osasuna. Cañizares was at fault for the last goal, and Cúper may
keep Palop in goal for the next league game. Three other first division teams
Alavés, Betis and Oviedo also lost by the odd goal to lower division
teams, the former losing 1-0 to second division B side Real Unión who
had eliminated Valladolid in the previous round. Barcelona and Mallorca could
only draw with teams from second division B, Poli Almería and Ourense
respectively, and Atlético Madrid and Espanyol drew with second division
A teams Las Palmas and Albacete. The only ray of light for Atlético was
the reappearance of Kiko after a year long injury. It was left to Celta to
salvage the pride of the first division. They beat Sporting 0-3. In the all
first division clashes, Rayo won by the only goal at Bilbao, Deportivo beat
Málaga also by a single goal, and Zaragoza won against Racing, by 2-1.
All three second division clashes ended in draws. See our cup section for full
results and scorers. |
