The luck of champions helped
Salamanca to keep up their drive at the top of the first division.
Their 1-2 victory at Lleida, with a last minute goal from Zegarra,
kept them six points clear at the top. Levante consolidated their
second position with a 2-4 away victory at Atlético B, cutting
short a brief recovery of the Madrid team under their new manager
Zambrano. Salillas scored his twelfth of the season and is now the
league's top scorer. Draws by Extremadura, Las Palmas and Sporting and
losses by Tenerife, Eibar and Albacete means that the top eight
positions remain unchanged. Compostela's young striker Changui,
followed by many big teams including Juventus, scored a hat-trick to
stake his claim for a place in the top level. Mérida were the
sixth team to change their manager this season, and new man Juan Señor
started with a good 2-0 victory against Tenerife. Logroñes are
now expected to survive, with two groups making offers for the team
and a third option to move to Alcobendas in the north of Madrid if all
else fails. They celebrated with a 4-1 victory over Albacete. In the
second division B, a threatened strike by players of Hércules
from Alicante was saved by the local authorities, who are helping to
pay their salaries.
