intensive programme of pre-season matches, this year starting early July and
going on to the end of August, when the league season begins again. We set out
below the most important games involving La Liga clubs, and will be publishing
regular updates when more information is known. NB. Games completed in red,
pending in blue, changes since our last report highlighted in bold. See also
friendly fixtures section for matches which took place during the league

Deportivo summer programme
Deportivo La Coruña are Spain's
representative in the Intertoto Cup this season, and are therefore the first
team to return from the summer break. Warm up games in Denmark against second
division side Amager 10/07, W 0-4 (Laure, Verdú, Juan Rodríguez,
Valerón) and first division club Brondby on 12/07, D 1-1 (Lafita),
before Intertoto - see below.
They then embark on a brief tour of Venezuela, with games
against Minerven in Puerto Ordaz 31/07, W 0-1 (Bodipo), Maritimo in Caracas
03/08, W 0-2 (Riki, Juan Rodríguez) and Deportivo Táchira in San
Cristobal 06/08, L 4-2 (Pablo Alvarez, Bravo pen), before returning to play in
the UEFA Cup qualifying round and to host the Teresa Herrera trophy - see
below. |

Aduríz).

Took part in Lokomotiv Moscow's Railways Cup, where they joined
the hosts, Chelsea and AC Milan. First game v Milan on 01/08, W 0-1 (Gattuso
og), then final against Lokomotiv on 03/08, where they won 0-3 (Romaric,
Koné, Chevantón) to take the trophy.
Afterwards on to Ajax's Amsterdam
tournament, where they played Inter Milan 08/08, D 0-0, and Arsenal 09/08, D
1-1 (Vela / Chevantón). Sevilla finished third behind Arsenal and Inter,
with hosts Ajax fourth.
Played in Cádiz's Carranza trophy (see below), and
announced they are creating the Antonio Puerta trophy in memory of the player

London where they took part in the Emirates Cup together with hosts Arsenal,
Juventus and Hamburg on 2/3 August. Madrid played Hamburg 02/08, W 2-1 (Van
Nistelrooy, Parejo) and Arsenal 03/08, L 1-0 (Adebayor pen). Hamburg won the
trophy after a 3-0 win over Juventus, who themselves beat Arsenal 0-1 in their
first game. The bad news was a serious injury to Sneijder, who will be out for
3 months.
Whistle stop flight to Colombia to play Independiente de Santa
Fé on 07/08, W 1-2 (Van der Vaart, Pepe), then back to Europe to face
Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany on 12/08, D 1-1 (Robinho). Then play two-leg

Olympic Games soccer tournament
The biggest sporting event of the
summer was of course the Olympic Games in China. Unfortunately former champions
Spain failed to qualify for the football finals this time around, although
several players from La Liga took part in the competition. Argentina beat
Nigeria in the final, with Messi, Agüero, Gago, Garay, Zabaleta, Ustari
(who picked up a serious injury), Fazio, Acosta, Marco Rubén and Banega
in a squad captained by Riquelme. |

Champions' League third qualifying round
Barcelona
and Atlético Madrid enter the competition at this stage. Barça
play Poland's Wisla Krakow, who beat Beitar Jerusalem in their previous round
tie, starting at home. Atlético have been drawn against Germany's

edition of FC Barcelona's annual tournament took place a couple of weeks
earlier than normal due to the club's participation in the qualifying round of
the Champions League. Won 2-1 against Argentina's Boca Juniors, Puyol and Eto'o
getting late goals to overturn Viatri's opener. |
