First round The regionalised draw for the first round proper of the Spanish cup threw together some interesting fixtures. Under the new format, first division clubs were seeded to play against teams from lower divisions, with ties to be played over one leg at the ground of the lower division side. Real Madrid visited second division B side Pajara Playas Jandia, who are from one of the lesser known Canary Islands, Fuerteventura. The club were only formed five years ago from the merger of four teams, are currently bottom of their division after winning promotion last year, and play on an artificial pitch. Needless to say they were happy with the draw. So too were Figueres, who receive the visit of their powerful neighbours Barcelona, and Marino, who will be hosts to Deportivo La Coruña. The matches will be played though at a later date than the other ties as both Barça and Deportivo will be playing their rescheduled Champions League games on the date fixed for the cup games to be played. Two fascinating local derbies also came out of the hat, with Rayo Vallecano once again getting the short straw to play against Atlético Madrid, who knocked them out of the competition last season, and the two Asturian sides Sporting and Oviedo, both now down in the second division, meeting at Gijon. Results of the ties played on 10th October are as follows (teams qualifying in bold, aet - after extra time, pp- penalty shoot out). Detailed reports.
