Celta made easy work of disposing of Viking Stavanger, running out 3-0 winners to virtually ensure their qualification for the third round. Missing the injured Mostovoi, Gustavo López and Vagner, Lotina was forced to remodel his midfield. However the new men fitted in well, and after Jandro hit the bar, Jesuli set up José Ignacio to score the opening goal past ex Sevilla keeper Olsen. Three minutes later Edu finished off after Catanha mis-hit a shot, giving the Gallicians a two goal lead at the break.

The Norwegians had only troubled Pinto once in the first half, when Nygaard headed over the bar in the first minute. They improved after the break though, and Fuglestad sent a shot just wide of the post. Having knocked Chelsea out of the cup in the previous round, Celta knew their opponents could be dangerous, and Lotine ordered his side to slow things down, bringing on McCarthy for Catanha up front. The Vigo based regained control, and within ten minutes McCarthy added a third, winning the ball well and hitting a curling shot over Olsen from outside of the area.
