Italy won the World Cup on a penalty shoot out after the game against France ended 1-1. Zidane opened the scoring for "les bleus" with a softly taken penalty early on, but Materazzi headed the equaliser from a corner a few minutes later. The two goalscorers were involved in an incident late in the game when Zidane was sent off for head-butting the Italian defender in response to a verbal insult, a sad end to the career of the Real Madrid star. The game eventually went to penalties, where Trezeguet's kick came back off the bar to hand the trophy to Lippi's side. (09.07.06)
