Spain qualified for the quarter finals on goal average after struggling to beat Morocco in their last group game. With Lacruz suspended and Marchena injured, Puyol and Unai came in to the defence, with José Mari returning from injury joining Tamudo in attack. Right from the start Morocco showed they were not in the mood for Olympic spirit, preferring to dish out hard tackles which Chinese referee Jun Lu was slow to clamp down on. Although Spain did most of the attacking, they could only break through the ferocious African defence once, José Mari finally beating keeper El Jamouni from close range on the half hour mark. Angulo, Tamudo and José Mari went close several times, but late in the match Morocco could have forced a draw as they advanced on Aranzubia's goal. However Gabri finally finished things off, and the referee finally sent off El Brazi in injury time. With Chile losing to Korea there was a three way tie on six points, but Spain finished second behind Chile on goal average. They now go on to play the European under 21 champions Italy in the quarter finals in Sydney.
