Another relatively low scoring week with only 27 goals in
ten matches, and given that two teams got five (Oviedo and Alavés), you
can imagine that no less than seven keepers kept clean sheets for the full 90
minutes this week. We mention 90 minutes because there was another keeper who
kept out the opposition for 60 but then had to go off injured, Mallorca's Mono
Burgos. He demonstrated why he is still Argentina's number one choice with a
brilliant display which included saving a penalty from Osasuna's Iván
Rosado before his hamstring went. Mallorca's B team keeper Miki Garro took over
as he did two weeks ago when Leo Franco got injured, but he was beaten within a
couple of minutes of coming on by Armentano. Miki is likely to continue at
least for a game or two, with Franco not quite fit yet, Burgos due to be out
for three weeks and of course Carlos Roa picking up a serious shoulder injury
very early on in the season. And to think they were complaining that they had
too many keepers at the start of the season! Two games finished goal-less, the
local derby between Barcelona (with Dutruel in goal) and Espanyol (Mora), and
Valladolid (Bizzarri) versus Málaga (Contreras). Celta's Cavallero and
Osasuna's Nuno kept two of the teams in the Champions League positions Real
Madrid and Mallorca to give help their teams to victory, and Oviedo's Esteban
was a mere bystander as Oviedo took poor old Lafuente to the fountain in their
5-0 thrashing of Bilbao. Racing's Ceballos was the other keeper who let in
five, and he drops out of our table with Juanmi taking his place. Our leader
Cañizares was finally beaten for the first time in three matches, and it
needed an Aranzábal penalty to do so. Even then it wasn't really a
penalty, as the Real Sociedad full back himself admitted he had tripped over
the keeper's feet and not the other way round. Not that Cañizares is
complaining - his team won and he is still six goals clear in the chart.
