What
a week for our keepers! No less than three failed to complete their games, with
Nacho González of Las Palmas sent off for the second time this season,
Málaga's Contreras also getting his marching orders after giving away
two penalties (Rafa reappearing much quicker than he might have imagined - see
last week's report), and Molina getting injured again after clashing with
Barcelona's Kluivert. Nacho González was probably feeling pleased with
himself when he stopped Diego Alonso's penalty five minutes from time, the only
penalty save of the weekend from no less than eight spot kicks, but only three
minutes later he was off. To make matters worse Las Palmas had already used
their three subs and therefore Robert Jarni had to go in goal to face Aimar's
free kick. Needless to say he didn't even see it as it hit the back of the net.
Asper's return to the Real Sociedad side only lasted four games, just long
enough for the transfer window to close and John Toshack to miss out on the
chance to sign Deportivo's Kouba. Asper was replaced by Alberto again for their
game against Espanyol, and their opponents also had a new man between the
sticks, Argensó making his league debut in place of Mora who cut his
hand badly the week before. Only four clean sheets this week, including our
leader Santiago Cañizares, who is setting new records having only let in
16 in 23 games. The others were Herrera of Alavés and two of the three
keepers tied for third place now, Leo Franco and Iker Casillas.
