A
strange week in the league, with no less than twelve keepers letting in one
goal and only two keeping their goals untouched, Alvaro Nuñez of
Numancia and Pep Reina of Barcelona. Reina junior is currently keeping out
Dutruel, and manager Serra Ferrer didn't even give the Frenchman a run out in
the cup, Reina keeping his place and managing another clean sheet, albeit
against second division B opposition Torrelavega. The top four positions
therefore are unchanged, with Casillas dropping a point after letting in two,
including a penalty against his old Real Madrid juniors teammate Fernando, now
on loan at Valladolid. Mallorca's Leo Franco made a spectacular penalty save
from Oviedo's Oli to earn his side a point, with his rival Mono Burgos getting
a game at last in the cup. Kasey Keller made the blunder of the day, blasting
the ball straight at Las Palmas player Pablo Lago, thereby leaving him alone a
yard from goal to score the equalising goal. Finally, Real Sociedad's new
manager John Toshack must have read our pages last week and felt sorry for his
Swedish keeper Asper. He gave him a last chance, threatening to bring in
Deportivo's redundant keeper Kouba if he failed again. He didn't, and is
expected to keep his place for next week's game. (22.01.01) |
