VAR had quite a bit of influence in the quarter finals of the cup this year. Granada knocked out Valencia thanks to an injury time penalty for hands by Jaume which González González missed until the video evidence pointed it out, and Mateu Lahoz’s VAR man also ruled out a strike by Real Madrid’s Vinicius which could have avoided defeat against Real Sociedad. Martínez Munuera didn’t resort to VAR though when Barcelona’s De Jong felt he should have had a penalty against Athletic, but De Burgos Bengoetxea did to confirm a penalty in favour of second division Mirandés which put them on track to beat Villarreal.
