A lot of controversy this weekend about whether it’s a penalty or not when a player handles in the area. Real Madrid (Feddal, Betis), Villarreal (Yuri, Athletic) and Real Sociedad (Neva, Granada) all had appeals turned down by their respective referees after VAR was consulted, whereas Osasuna (Duarte, Alavés) were awarded a spot-kick. New rules though are apparently in force about whether it was deliberate or not, what position the arm was in (against the body or outstretched), what distance was involved, etc. Experts were apparently in agreement with their peers (with the possible exception of Neva), but all agreed that is getting more complicated, and referees were apparently shown 650 video clips at their latest training session to help them decide. Pretty soon you’re going to need a degree in knowing things to become a ref! (04.11.19)
