The new season is upon us, and it didn’t take long for the controversy to begin! Fernández Borbalán drew the short straw for the second leg of the Super Cup between Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid, and he had to deal with some hot tempers, not least of all Atlético coach Diego Simeone, who ended up getting sent off – see “Villains” section for more on that one. And in the opening game in the league, Mateu Lahoz upset Athletic Bilbao when he ruled out what would have been a brilliant injury time headed equalizer from keeper Gorka Iraizoz, and then turned down a clear penalty appeal for a foul by Kameni on Aduríz in the last seconds. Mateu explained to the angry players that he had disallowed the goal for the positional offside of Aduríz, but then his linesman told someone else it was a foul by Laporte! Whatever the reason, Mateu did try his best to help beforehand by sending off two Málaga players, albeit reasonably justified. Welcome back everybody, the fun is just beginning! (27.08.14)
