Without prejudice to two or three second division
referees, there was only one winner of the white stick award this week, our old
friend Megía Dávila. Megía had to have a police escort off
the ground an hour after the game as 50 or so Celta supporters were waiting for
him at the exit. What had he done to create so much interest from the home
fans? Well, he did disallow a goal from Catanha on the stroke of half time, but
the player really was offside, so that shouldn't have been a problem. Perhaps
what upset them more was the sending off of Juanfran and then Edu in the second
half, allowing Racing to come back and equalise. It certainly upset manager
Víctor Fernández and his assistant Ramón Carnero, and they
were both booked for commenting near the end "I say, you are awarding all the
free kicks against us!", rather obscene language which should not be heard on a
field of play. No wonder he booked them! Well, actually Megía was
perhaps a bit heavy handed on the old yellows, dishing out twelve in all as
well as the two reds, but then he had to do something to get back to the top
spots of the white stick table. Other than that there was little to comment,
except perhaps for the theatrical Prados García, who blew the final
whistle right into Roberto Carlos's ear while his back was turned. The grimace
on the face of the Brazilian was a picture which did the rounds of the
television channels on Sunday night. Total cards this week, 55 yellows, 2 reds.
