Not the greatest of weeks for our Champions League sides, with Barcelona and Atlético Madrid drawing their respective games on Tuesday. Barça still top their group after their score-less result at Olympiacos, but Atlético are virtually out of the competition after they were held 1-1 by the little known Qarabag, Thomas at least saving a draw for Simeone’s side after the visitors had gone ahead. The following day Real Madrid were beaten 3-1 at Tottenham, Ronaldo’s sixth in the competition coming too late to change things (albeit that they are still a comfortable second), and Sevilla were the only team to win, a 2-1 victory over Spartak Moscow with strikes from Lenglet and Banega getting their campaign back on track. Better news on Thursday however, with wins for all three La Liga sides. An early Bacca strike and a late own goal gave Villarreal a 0-2 victory at Slavia Prague, Juanmi, De la Bella and Jon Bautista were the scorers for Real Sociedad as they beat Vardar 3-0, and Aduríz (who else?) saved the day for Athletic Bilbao in a 1-0 win against Östersunds.
Barcelona maintain their lead at the top of the league table, Paco Alcácer taking advantage of a rare start to score both goals in a 2-1 victory over Sevilla on Saturday. Valencia stay in second spot though after a 3-0 win over Alavés, Rodrigo once again amongst the scorers, and Real Madrid are still third after they beat Las Palmas 3-0, Casemiro, Asensio and Isco getting the goals there (Ronaldo has still only scored one in the league so far!). Two from Sansone against Málaga took Villarreal back up to fifth, and Real Sociedad are seventh after a 3-1 win against neighbours Eibar, Willian José heading the first and Oyarzabal netting the last. Elsewhere Iago Aspas scored twice in Celta’s 3-1 victory over Athletic, with Raúl García replying for the visitors, Stuani was on the scoresheet as Girona beat Levante 1-2 (new signing Enes Ünal getting an injury time consolation for the locals), and Sanabria came on as substitute to save a point for Betis in a 2-2 draw against Getafe on Friday.
