Spain's woes in Europe
continued midweek, with Sevilla and Real Madrid both being knocked out of the
Champions League. The Andalusians lost to Fenerbahçe in a penalty shoot
out after winning the second leg 3-2, with Kanouté one of the scorers,
and Madrid lost the following day to Roma despite Raúl's goal. An early
strike from Xavi against Celtic took Barcelona through to the last eight
though, and on Thursday Getafe did themselves proud, De la Red and Pablo
Hernández scoring in a 1-2 win at Benfica, a result which provoked the
resignation of the Portuguese side's Spanish coach José Antonio Camacho.
On to the league at the
weekend, and there were a season's best 35 goals in all. That was due in part
though to Mallorca's best ever first division haul of seven goals against
Recreativo, with Arango scoring a hat-trick and Güiza and Borja Valero
getting two each. Güiza is the top scoring Spanish player in La Liga, just
ahead of Raúl, who got the winner from the penalty spot against Espanyol
on Saturday. His goal took his side back to eight points above Barcelona, who
lost 1-2 to Villarreal in the Nou Camp the following day, Xavi's fifth in seven
games not enough to prevent Tomasson from scoring a late winner for the "Yellow
Submarine".
Our leader Luis Fabiano was
on target again though, giving Sevilla a win against Levante after Riga had
opened the scoring for the Valencia based side. Diego Milito got his first goal
in eight games from the penalty spot to give Manolo Villanova (his fourth coach
this season) a win on his debut against Atlético, and David Villa got
one of Valencia's goals in a 2-2 draw with Deportivo. Elsewhere the two cup
semi-final rivals Getafe and Racing both won 3-0, Pablo getting another for
Michael Laudrup's side and Tchité scoring again for the Cantabrians.
