A two
week lay off for the league program, but many of our top strikers went on to
play for their countries in the latest round of international matches and
returned somewhat the worse for wear after a long hard season. In fact of the
24 players who featured in our last table, only one, Roy Makaay, got his name
on the scoresheet this weekend. His goal though was an important one, giving
his side the three points at Valencia to hold on to second spot and leave their
opponents with a foot outside of the Champions League places. Our table does
not include goals scored for the national sides, a pity for Raúl who got
two more for Spain against Bosnia and Israel to move up to fifth in the all
time goalscorers table. Hierro's goal against Bosnia, his 27th for his country,
takes him one ahead of Butragueño to the top, an amazing feat for a
defender. Di Stefano is third with 23, Sallinas has 22 and Raúl is now
level with Michel on 21. It must only be a matter of time now until the Madrid
striker passes them all and enters the record books. Thirty goals were scored
in the first division, with four players coming in to our charts this week
after scoring for their clubs. Luis Cembranos becomes the fourth Rayo Vallecano
player in our list after getting two to keep his side in the first division
next season. He does however feature in our villains write up at the same time
as he got himself sent off for his troubles. Tamudo and Urzaiz both scored for
the second week running, although with mixed fortune, as Espanyol won their
game against Las Palmas and Athletic Bilbao lost their's to local rivals Real
Sociedad. Mallorca's Eto'o got his third in two games to move on to twelve
goals, but his future is uncertain at the moment, with talk of a return to Real
Madrid or a possible move to another club. (11.06.01) |
