Rivaldo increased his lead at the top of the table with
two spectacular goals against Celta in the UEFA cup tie, enough to see
Barça through to a semi-final tie with Liverpool. Catanha got one of
Celta's three, but they still go out of the competition. For the first time in
many moons Real Madrid (ergo Raúl) failed to score in both their midweek
European match and in the league at the weekend, but neither were of much
importance, with the team already qualified as group leaders in the Champions
League, and none of their close rivals winning in the league. Patrick Kluivert
kept a goal ahead of Catanha in fourth place with one against Numancia, but his
team only earnt a point in a disappointing match. Valencia's Juan
Sánchez improved his position in our chart with a couple of goals, one
in the Champions League and another against Celta at the weekend, and he moves
up on to thirteen points level with four others, including Dely Valdés
who scored against Osasuna and who has got all his goals in the league. Urzaiz
comes in to our table for the first time after getting his third goal in four
games, just as Camacho left him out of the Spanish national squad for once. Bad
timing there from the coach. The best performance of the week came from Celta's
Karpin who hit a hat-trick in fifteen minutes against Valencia, although two of
them did come from controversial penalties. See white stick section for more
