Pichichis
Top scorers in all club competitions. Rivaldo scored from a free kick in Barcelona's cup match against Espanyol to extend his lead at the top. Curiously though, neither he nor Kluivert scored at all in their team's seven goal rout of Athletic Bilbao. Luis Enrique did get three though, and he comes in to our chart for the first time. Raúl closed up on Javi Moreno with two headed goals from successive Figo crosses in three minutes against Málaga, and Guti got another to get his goalscoring act back on track. Raúl's goals take him above Ziganda as the highest active scorer in the league with 113, and he is still ony 23. Dely Valdés returned after an injury and tucked one away at the other end to take his total for the season to ten. Elsewhere Valencia's captain Mendieta got his ninth of the season, a rare volley with his left foot, to take him level with two of his teammates, Carew and Juan Sánchez. It was the equal highest scoring weekend of the league this season, with 39 goals in the ten matches, and Roy Makaay was in the thick of things again with another brace to take his tally to twelve, including six in the last four league games. His first goal was however quite controversial, the Racing defenders stopping as a linesman lifted his flag for offside. Makaay stopped as well, but then thought perhaps he was in the right as he did receive the ball from a wild backpass from Mazzoni, and just in the case he stuck the ball in the net. Much to the dismay of the visiting players referee Megía Dávila allowed the goal, correctly as it proved, although the linesman can cross Santander off his holiday list for a few years at least judging from the reaction of some of the players.
