Second Division - Day 5

Mirandés's brief stay at the top of the second division only lasted a week, a 0-3 defeat at the hands of Recreativo on Saturday evening leaving them down in fourth spot pending Sunday's games. The Andalusians started the weekend just three points below their hosts, and they could have gone behind two or three teams before Fernando Vega latched on to a loose clearance to open the scoring midway through the first half. Visiting keeper Cabrero had saves to make in the second half as well, but two shots by Arana from outside of the area finished them off.

Recre move joint top together with Girona, who came from behind to beat Lugo 1-2. Rennella put the Andalusians ahead on the quarter hour mark with his fourth of the season, but Timor made it all square with a well struck free kick early in the second half, and Felipe Sanchón got the winner from the penalty spot with five minutes to go after Alvaro Peña was sent off for handling in the area.

Córdoba are also on ten points though, just behind the leaders thanks to the lower number of goals scored, after a 3-1 victory over Numancia. Antonio Tomás actually put the visitors ahead in the second minute following a Julio Alvarez corner, but Abel volleyed home the equaliser later in the first half, and with the visitors down to ten after Akapo was sent off, Xisco and Caballero made sure of the three points for the hosts.

Eibar missed out on a chance to join the leaders though, a 1-0 defeat at Sabadell leaving them three points below the top spots. Gato got the only goal of the game from the penalty spot after he was fouled by Lillo to give the Catalans their first win since the opening day.

Further down the table Zaragoza finally clocked up a first victory of the season which took them out of the bottom four, a 3-0 scoreline against Tenerife taking some of the pressure off Paco Herrera following a bad start to the league coupled with their midweek elimination from the cup. Visiting keeper Aragoneses had to make a couple of saves from new signing Angelo Henriquez before the interval, and a couple of minutes after the restart half time substitute Víctor Rodríguez put the locals ahead with a well struck free kick. Montañés added a second a few minutes later, and Víctor got his second of the evening after that to leave the Canary Islanders further down in the drop zone. (14.09.13)

Sporting Gijón moved to the top of the second division after beating Deportivo 2-0 on Sunday lunchtime. Visiting keeper Lux did have some work to do in the first half, but he was not really tested until he kept out Scepovic immediately after the restart. Barrera also had a strike ruled out for a non-existent offside, but with just over an hour gone the Asturians were awarded a hotly contested penalty after Isma López was brought down on the edge of the area by Luisinho, Scepovic stepping up to score for a club record fifth game in a row. Depor's only reply was a header by Borja just wide of the post, and with twenty minutes to go Barrera got on the end of a Scepovic cross to score his side's second.

Alcorcón were the only team who could have caught Sandoval's side, but they fell to a disappointing 0-1 defeat against Ponferradina in the last game of the day, and they ended the weekend even outside of the play-off spots. Yuri put the visitors ahead on the quarter hour mark after good work by Cristian down the wing, and the Brazilian striker wasted a couple of chances to increase the lead before the break, the first which Dani Giménez kept out, and the second which ended up sailing over the bar. Angel Sánchez tested Moldovan after the restart, but the visitors held on to move to within a point of their hosts in the table.

No less than six teams ended the weekend one behind Sporting on ten points, with Murcia taking second spot on goals scored after beating Alavés 2-1. All the goals came after the break, the locals taking the lead when Luciano deflected Saúl's shot in to his own net some ten minutes after the interval. Manu García equalised for the visitors soon afterwards, but Kike García got on the end of a Wellington Silva free kick to score the winner with three minutes to go, his fifth of the season taking him level with Scepovic at the top of the second division Pichichi chart.

Barcelona B are also on ten points after beating Real Madrid Castilla 2-0 in their "mini-clásico". Dani Nieto, Sergi Samper and Joan Román all went close before Sandro headed the opener midway through the first half. And Nieto got the second just two minutes later from the penalty spot after he was brought down in the area by Lucas Torró. Masip did well to keep out Borja at the other end, but it was another defeat for the visitors, who are sadly missing the likes of Morata, Jesé, Cheryshev, Casemiro and company. They remain at the bottom of the table with zero points and only one goal scored in the first five games of the season.

Also down the rankings, Mallorca move out of the relegation spots after a 2-2 draw at Hércules. The Islanders will be ruing the fact though that they threw away a two goal lead in the last ten minutes, strikes by De Lucas and Dioni saving a late point for the Alicante based side. Gerard Moreno latched on to a Víctor Casadesús headed pass to put the visitors in front on the half hour mark, and Thomas made it two after combining with Víctor and Moreno with twenty minutes to go. De Lucas fired one back though, and a shot by Héctor Font (who was later on sent off for a high tackle on Thomas) hit Dioni and deflected in to the net with only a couple of minutes to go.

Elsewhere Las Palmas moved away from the danger zone as well thanks to a 1-0 victory over Jaén. New signings Aranda and Masoud combined for the Iranian midfielder to head in a cross from the ex Granada striker with just over half an hour gone, but in the end it took a string of good saves from local keeper Barbosa to ensure a first win for the Canary Islanders. The defeat leaves the visitors back down in the relegation spots, level with Alavés and just a point above Tenerife. (15.09.13)
