Second Division - Day 7

Ponferradina moved out of the relegation spots after coming from behind to beat Real Madrid Castilla 1-2 on Friday evening. It was a rainy night in the Spanish capital, but the locals weathered the conditions early on, and Jesé set up Borja to lob Orlando and open the scoring with a quarter of an hour on the clock. Yuri equalised though on the hour mark with a low shot after Mayor played the ball across, and with the game in injury time Iván González sliced the ball in to his own net trying to clear Mayor's cross. Elche and Villarreal hold on to the top two spots after both won on Saturday evening. Elche stay in top spot though after a 3-0 win over Recreativo, Fran Escribà's side having only dropped two points in their first seven matches. Within half an hour the match was already over, Fidel opening the scoring against his old team in only the second minute after Coro set him up. Soon afterwards Matamala turned an Edu Albacar corner in to his own net to make it two, and in the twenty-ninth minute Coro added a third with an individualistic effort. Earlier in the evening Villarreal made it four home wins from four after beating Córdoba 2-0. The locals had the better of the match, although the goals didn't come until the last ten minutes, with Hernán Pérez getting the first after Alberto pushed out a shot from Pandiani, and Uche getting the second soon after coming on. By then both teams were down to ten men after Joan Oriol and López Silva got themselves sent off for fighting.

Good results again for the Catalan sides, with Sabadell moving up to third after a 2-1 victory over bottom club Guadalajara. Heavy rain made play difficult, but the locals took the lead with a Lanzarote penalty after Espin was sent off for bringing down Hidalgo ten minutes before the break. Barral headed the equaliser on the hour mark from Alvaro Antón's free kick, but with five minutes to go substitute Ulises Dávila headed in a corner to make it four wins in a row for Lluis Carreras's side. Fourth placed Girona also mastered a waterlogged pitch to beat Sporting Gijón 3-1, with all their goals coming in the first quarter of the match. Jandro set up Benja for the opener in the first minute, and nine minutes later Benja got his second of the evening following a corner. Tébar made it three soon afterwards from a Jandro free kick, and Trejo's consolation goal came too late to prevent a defeat which leaves the Asturians back in the relegation zone.

Rain as well in the Catalan capital, where Barcelona B were held to a soggy 1-1 draw by Las Palmas. Thievy hit the bar early on for the visitors, but Deulofeu put the home side in front shortly before half time with an angled shot which went under Barbosa. Substitute Crisantus headed the equaliser though from Momo's cross with twenty minutes to go, and although Vicente Gómez was sent off near the end, the Canary Islanders held on for a point which takes them out of the bottom four. Barça B are now level with Alcorcón, who are up in to the play-off spots after a 1-0 victory over Huesca. Fernando Sales headed the only goal midway through the second half following a cross by Sergio Mora, who was himself sent off for a second bookable offence in injury time. The Madrid based side could have added to their lead after that, although Manu Fernández had to make the save of the evening from Borja near the end to ensure the three points.

Murcia are just two points behind Alcorcón after they won 0-3 at Xerez. Cristian García and Oscar Sánchez put the visitors two up shortly before the break, the first after Matilla set him up, and the second following a corner. And after Bouzón and Eddy were both sent off for second bookings, Emilio Sánchez completed the scoring on a late breakaway with three minutes to go. Numancia drop below Murcia after they were held to a 1-1 draw at an improving Racing Santander, who took the lead early on when Dorca headed in a Francis assist. Visiting keeper Herrerín had to make some important saves, and the visitors saved a point thanks to a controversial Nagore penalty with twenty minutes to go after the referee ruled that Oscar Pérez had handled in the area. Lugo are now a point behind Numancia after they beat Mirandés 2-0, Tonetto opening the scoring in the fifth minute with a well struck free kick, and Pablo Alvarez heading the second early in the second half after Goitia could only block a shot from Oscar Díaz. The defeat leaves the newly promoted side down in the drop zone. (29.09.12)

Once again there was only one second division match on Sunday, with Almería and Hércules sharing the points after their game ended without goals. Contrary to all expectations, Juan Carlos Mandiá was still in charge of the Alicante based side, the coach apparently having been given a three week reprieve by the club's legal administrator after he was sacked by the board at the start of the week. His team had the better chances if any though, with Gilvan hitting the post early on and Sarpong failing to beat Esteban when free on goal after the interval. Ulloa, Aarón, Charles and Calvo all failed to hit the target at the other end, and visiting keeper Falcón had little to do all evening, even after Escassi was red-carded in injury time. Hércules have still to score a single goal away from home this season, and although they didn't lose, they still remain in next to bottom spot. Almeria drop points for the first time in their Mediterráneo stadium, but the draw takes them back up to fourth. (30.09.12)
