Celta saved themselves from relegation on the final day of the season, a 1-0 victory over Espanyol coupled with a 0-1 defeat for Deportivo taking them above their regional rivals to seventeenth. Only two weeks ago Abel Resino's side were languishing at the bottom of the table, but a win over Valladolid last weekend had given them hope, and when Natxo Insa got on the end of a Iago Aspas cross to beat Kiko Casilla with a quarter of an hour gone, they were already out of the bottom three. Still with a mathematical chance of making the European spots, the visitors put up a brave fight, 17 year old keeper Rubén Blanco having to save from Verdú and Stuani, and Sergio García going close either side of half time. Aspas brought a couple of good saves out of Casilla as well, but wth Mallorca now winning, a goal by the Catalans would have still meant the drop. However the locals held on for a victory which took them on to 37 points, the joint lowest total by any side who have avoided relegation in the history of La Liga.
