Mallorca missed out on a chance to return to the Champions League spots, a 1-0 defeat at Deportivo leaving them in fifth place despite Sevilla's loss against Barcelona. Gregorio Manzano's side dominated the opening minutes, Webó, Mario Suárez and Aduríz all failing to covert chances.
Either side of half time though Riki headed a corner against the top of the bar and Lopo and Riki both went close with further headers. And midway through the second half the returning Filipe Luis combined with Valerón to set up Riki to score what was to prove the only goal of the game.
Juan Rodríguez could have added to the lead after that, but the locals had done enough to put an end to a run of eleven games without a win. A disappointment for the visitors, but they are at least assured of a place in Europe next season.
