Atlético Madrid would appear to have given up any hope of qualifying for Europe via the league, and their players were whistled off the field at the end after a humiliating 1-2 defeat at the hands of bottom club Xerez. Bermejo opened the scoring for the Andalusians with a looping header over De Gea from Casado's cross, but the lead only lasted three minutes before Diego Forlán equalised after picking up a pass from Valera. However Armenteros got on the end of Orellana's free kick midway through the second half to head home a second goal which keeps alive his side's hopes of survival. Another poor performance by Atleti, although their interest this season is to win one of the two cup competitions they are still involved in.
