Real Madrid dropped five points behind leaders Barcelona after losing 1-0 to Athletic Bilbao on Saturday evening. The locals came out strongly from the start, Gurpegui and Toquero both hitting the post with only two minutes gone. And a minute later Llorente headed the opener past Casillas after Lass could only head back Yeste's corner across goal.
After that though Madrid felt themselves unlucky not to at least save a point, Benzema hitting the post shortly before half time, Cristian Ronaldo bringing a couple of good saves out of Iraizoz and Kaká firing another good chance over the top. Athletic ended with ten men when Gurpegui picked up a second booking in injury time, but they held on for the few remaining seconds to ensure a win which takes them up to seventh, level on points with Mallorca and Sevilla.
