Real Madrid beat Tenerife 3-0 in the opening game on Saturday to move ahead of Barcelona on goal difference, although it was a flattering result as their opponents put up a good fight throughout the match. Nino put the first chance wide, although Aragoneses had to be at his best to keep out Raúl at point blank range and then save a well struck Cristian Ronaldo free kick.
Pellegrini had rested Kaká for the midweek Champions League game, but at half time he brought him on together with Guti to try and find a way through. And within two minutes they were ahead, Xabi Alonso (who's brother Mikel was in the opposite team) floated across a long ball which Benzema headed down past keeper.
After that it was Casillas's turn to shine with a first class save from Román, and Nino put another effort over the top when through on goal. But Madrid went further ahead when Manolo Martínez failed to cut out a long ball, allowing Benzema to run on and score his second of the evening.
Benzema almost completed his hat-trick with a shot just wide of the far post soon afterwards, but Román hit the post at the other end, and Casillas had to produce another first class save from Nino. A few minutes later though Kaká wrapped things up with a shot from outside of the area, and Madrid were back on top.
