Athletic Bilbao made it two wins out of two in the league after beating newcomers Xerez 0-1 on Sunday evening. Local keeper Renan saved a Javi Martínez penalty early on after Abel had handled in the area, but he was left stranded a few minutes later when David Prieto turned Susaeta's cross in to his own net.
Llorente could have made it two when he headed against the bar, but Viqueira in particular went close a couple of times for the Andalusians before Mendoza was sent off for a foul on Muniain. Athletic end the weekend in fourth place, and Xerez share the bottom of the table with Espanyol, having yet to pick up a point.
