Second Division - play-offs, day 4

Cádiz were proclaimed second division B champions after drawing their second leg match against Cartagena 1-1 on Saturday evening. The new format allowed for a champions play-off to take place for the first time, with the two newly-promoted sides to meet to decide the winners. A 1-2 result from the first leg gave Cádiz the edge, and they went further ahead when Rubiato beat Castilla ten minutes before the break. Armando equalised four minutes later, but the locals held on for the victory.

One of the four semi-final play-offs took place on Saturday as well, with Real Unión going through to the finals after a 1-1 draw against Sabadell. An early Goikoetxea penalty after Mejías fouled Gabarain added to the Basque side's one goal lead from the first leg, but Jaume equalised before the break. And the Catalans felt themselves unlucky not to have qualified themselves after a second half shot from Joel was pushed out by keeper Otermin after it had crossed the line, the referee waving away appeals for a goal. One of the regional group champions will not be going up though, Alcoyano being knocked out on the away goal rule despite a 2-1 victory over Alcorcón. Rafa Gómez turned in Negredo's free kick to give the home side the lead shortly before the break, but Cristian equalised with just over an hour gone, and a second goal from Patri four minutes later was not enough for the locals. The Madrid based team will play another of the group champions, Real Unión, in one of the two finals.

Villarreal B lost out at the end of the season to Alcoyano in regional group III, but they could have the last laugh after beating Lorca 2-3. Cristóbal put the visitors ahead midway through the first half, and although Manu Busto equalised soon afterwards, Joan Tomás restored the lead from the penalty spot after he was brought down by keeper Quintana four minutes in to the second half. The locals were left with nine men after Vicente and Aarón were sent off, and the game ended with Cristóbal scoring his second of the night and Manu Busto replying again from the penalty spot with two minutes to go.

Villarreal B will play Real Jaén over two legs in the second final after the Andalusians beat Ponferradina 1-0. Arriaga got what was to prove the only goal of the game in the tenth minute, but local keeper Dani Hernández had to be at his best to save from De Paula a couple of times before the break, and from a Jonathan Valle penalty five minutes after the restart. Calderón and Alex García could have increased the lead later on, but the locals had done enough to go through on the away goal rule. (07.06.09)
