Cartagena and Cádiz were both promoted after winning their respective play-offs last weekend, but they still had to play each other over two legs to decide who will be the overall second division B champions. And Cádiz have the clear advantage after beating their rivals 1-2 in the first leg. Two goals from Rubiato in the first half hour gave the visitors a big lead. But Nano and Mena hit the woodwork at the other end before the break, and Nano got one back from the penalty spot midway through the second half after Dani Fragoso was sent off.
Under the new format, the losers of the champions' play-offs have a second chance in the knock-out stage, and Real Unión are on track for a place in one of the finals after beating Sabadell 0-1 in their first leg tie. Juan got the only goal on the half hour mark in a rapid counter-attack after Juvenal had hit the bar at the other end, and visiting keeper Oterman saved a late penalty from Roberto Morales to ensure the win.
Alcoyano didn't fare so well though, a 1-0 defeat at Alcorcón leaving them with an uphill battle for the second leg. Crisitian headed the only goal from a Calvillo free kick with ten minutes to go, and the visitors ended with nine men after Negredo and Sergio Mora were sent off.
Ponferradina have the advantage over one of the hot favourites Real Jaén after a 2-1 victory in the Toralín stadium. De Paula headed the first from a Fuentes cross shortly before half time, and Teo got the second for the locals after Valle set him up on the hour mark. Esparza got one back for the Andalusians a couple of minutes later though to set up a thrilling second leg.
Villarreal B are the only B team to make it in to the play-offs, and they got off to a good start in their semi-final with a 1-0 win over Lorca. The only goal came a quarter of an hour from the end, youngster Matilla sending Gerard Bordas through for him to beat Orlando Quintana. (31.05.09)
