Second Division A - Day 3

Seven games in the second division on Saturday evening, with Real Sociedad ending the day at the top of the pack after a 2-0 win over Murcia. Xabi Prieto opened the scoring with an early penalty after Guerreiro fouled Carlos Martínez, and Díaz de Cerio wrapped things up with an angled shot later on to leave Javier Clemente's side down in the relegation zone without a point from their first three matches.

Rayo Vallecano are level with Real on seven points after a 2-1 victory over Alavés. Michel put the Madrid based side ahead midway through the first half after Jofre's shot was blocked, and although Javi Guerra equalised with a quarter of an hour to go after Igor set him up, Diamé picked up an assist from Albiol to strike home the winner three minutes later.

Only one of the top four clubs played though, Eibar dropping out of the promotion spots after a 2-0 defeat at Huesca. Rubén Castro opened the scoring and then set up Roberto for the second for the new boys in the first ten minutes, and they held on for their first win despite having Edu roldán sent off midway through the second half.

Celta join Murcia at the foot of the table after losing 0-2 to Gimnàstic, and they too have yet to pick up a point. Senegal's Papa Diop got the first some ten minutes in to the second half, and Cameroon's Serge N'Gal ran on to Jandro's pass to score the second near the end, just eleven seconds after coming on to make his debut for the Catalans.

Zaragoza haven't got going yet either, and they are still without a win after drawing 2-2 at Las Palmas. Caffa and Ewerthon gave Marcelino's side the lead twice in the second half, the first after a defensive mistake and the second a header from a Jorge López cross. But Saúl equalised the first time and then set up Marcos Márquez for a second to save a point for the Canary islanders. The game ended in disarray though, Zapater sent off in the last minute for a second bookable offence, and Pulido and Márquez reported for fighting in the tunnel.

Draws as well in the other two fixtures, with the game between Alicante and Castellón ending without goals, keepers Unanua and Carlos Sánchez the stars of that match, and Córdoba and Sevilla Atlético cancelling each other out 1-1. Ito put the locals ahead shortly after the restart, but Cala headed the equaliser for their neighbours a few minutes later. Córdoba ended the game with nine men after Gaspar and Cristian Alvarez were both sent off for second bookable offences. (13.09.08)

Tenerife beat Elche 2-4 on Sunday lunchtime to leave David's Vidal side down in the relegation spots. The Canary islanders had not won away from home in 2008, but ex Elche striker Nino got the first for them following a free kick in the twentieth minute, and Kome added a second just two minutes after the restart. David Fuster got one back though with a spectacular shot, and even though Wakaso was sent off after pushing Manolo in the face, Usero made it all square with a header from a free kick. Alfaro restored the lead however with a header from a corner, and with the locals down to eight men after Dani Benítez was red carded and Raúl Fuster limped off injured, Angel wrapped things up in injury time.

Hércules moved back up to the top of the second division after a 0-2 win over Levante later in the evening. Tuni got the first early on after some slack defending, and after local defender Cerra was sent off, Fernando Morán added a second in injury time to take the Alicante based side on to seven points. It was the first time that Levante had dropped points this season.

Girona were the only one of last weekend's leading four to get a point, a 1-1 draw at Albacete keeping them in second spot. Carlos Merino's strike for the locals on the hour mark after Diego Costa set him up was quickly cancelled out by Serra's header. Visiting keeper Rafa Ponzo did the rest with a series of great saves, although the locals did hit the woodwork twice late on.

Meanwhile another of last week's leading sides Xerez were beaten 2-1 by Salamanca. Salva Sevilla lobbed the keeper to open the scoring five minutes before the interval, but Antoñito equalised for the visitors a couple of minutes later. Sevilla won it though with a long shot near the end to give the home side their first win of the season. (14.09.08)
