Real Madrid closed the gap on Barcelona to four points after they beat Sevilla 2-4 in the Sánchez Pizjuán stadium on Sunday evening.
Barça's draw at Valencia the day before gave hope to the side now managed by Juande Ramos, who was showered by Monopoly money throw by fans as a sign of what they thought of their old coach and his motives for leaving the club.
Renato headed the Andalusians in to an early lead, but Raúl equalised on the stroke of half time after a good run by Metzelder down the wing. And after Casillas kept out Kanouté, Raúl completed a hat-trick with two more in three minutes around the hour mark.
Substitute Diego Capel scored again for the locals with eight minutes to go, but Marcelo beat Palop again on a late breakaway in injury time to set up an exciting clash with the leaders next weekend in the Santiago Bernabeu.
