Deportivo dropped out of the UEFA Cup spots after a 3-2 defeat at Sporting Gijón, who move away from the danger zone as a result. All the goals came in the second half after a dull first 45 minutes, with Luis Morán putting the Asturians ahead after Aranzubia failed to hold on to a shot from Barral. And Barral himself added a second from the penalty spot four minutes later after referee Rodríguez Santiago ruled that Lopo had fouled Carmelo inside the area.
Depor fought back though, and Sergio got one back from the penalty spot after Verdú was fouled inside the area. But youngster José Angel made it three with a low shot into the bottom corner of the net following a short free kick, and although Riki converted a third penalty after Raúl Cámara brought him down late on it was not enough to change the result.
