Second placed Real Madrid saw their run of ten league victories in a row come to end after they were held to a 1-1 draw by city rivals Atlético Madrid, and they ended the day six points behind leaders Barcelona.
The early chances fell to the locals, with Robben and Marcelo testing Leo Forlán. But Casillas had to be on his toes to keep out Agüero, and shortly before half time the visitors went ahead when Forlán beat Casillas after a rapid breakaway.
Huntelaar equalised soon after the restart, referee Fernández Borbolán turning down appeals for offside when he collected a through ball from substitute Higuaín. And after that the game opened up as both sides went for the three points, Forlán hitting the post and Higuaín firing a free kick just over the top.
Atlético had the better chances late on though, Sinama-Pongolle shooting wide with the goal at his mercy, and Agüero missing the target a couple of times and bringing a couple of good saves out of Casillas later on. Robben headed wide and Raúl went close with an overhead kick, but in the end Madrid were grateful for a point against a side who have not beaten them since 1999.
