Real Madrid pegged back two points on leaders Barcelona after beating Sporting Gijón 0-4 on Sunday evening. Raúl started things off on the quarter hour mark, connecting with Sergio Ramos's cross to score his 308th goal for the club, taking him past Di Stéfano's old record.

Madrid continued to dominate, Higuaín and Raúl going close before Huntelaar picked up Higuaín's headed pass to beat Lafuente, his first goal since his winter signing. And Marcelo (playing a wide midfield role) made it three soon after the restart with his first Real Madrid goal after another assist from Higuaín.

Soon afterwards Huntelaar had a headed goal ruled out for a non-existent offside, and a few minutes later Raúl scored again after Lafuente spilled Higuaín's shot in to his path. Barral hit the post for the Asturians late on, but by then the game was over and Juande Ramos's side had their eighth win in a row. Still ten points off Barça, but there is a long way to go yet.
