Sporting Gijón have yet to draw this season, and they moved up safely to mid-table after a 1-0 victory over Almería. The visitors had several chances in the first half, Negredo in particular failing to beat Sergio Sánchez in the opening minutes. But the one that counted was a header by Maldonado from Carmelo's cross on the half hour mark, giving the Asturians the lead.

The visitors were unlucky to have a Negredo goal disallowed for a dubious offside by referee Alvaro Izquierdo after Negredo and Piatti had had previous efforts blocked, and Julio Alvarez went close on the stroke of half time. And after the restart Negredo went close a couple of times. But it was not to be, and a fifth game without a win signalled the end for Almería coach Gonzalo Arconada, who was fired shortly after the final whistle.
