Leaders Barcelona made it
eight league wins in a row after a 6-0 thrashing of Valladolid on Saturday
evening. Once again the most of the goals came in the first half, with Samuel
Eto'o scoring four himself by the break. The Cameroonian striker latched on to
a Dani Alves pass to open the scoring early on, and fired home the second a few
minutes later after Asenjo could only push out a shot from Henry.
Guardiola's side were
running amok though, and Gudjohnsen, Messi and Henry could all have had their
name on the scoresheet before Eto'o completed his hat-trick after Messi put him
through. And just two minutes later another good run by Messi was only cleared
as far as Eto'o, who gratefully steered a shot inside the near post.
It was another overpowering
display from the Catalan side, although Valladolid had perhaps contributed to
their own downfall by trying to play open ,attractive football. They did have
their chances as well, Valdés in particular having to tip a
centre-come-shot from Sesma over the bar early in the second half. But Henry,
Eto'o, Gudjohnsen and Xavi all went close before Henry won the ball off Nano
following a sloppy clearance by Asenjo, setting up Gudjohnsen for him to chip a
shot over the keeper.
Eto'o went off to a standing
ovation, but the onslaught continued, Messi and Henry both failing to convert
chances before Henry finally got the goal he was looking for after Hleb and
Messi combined to set him up. A crushing victory, and Barcelona have now scored
an incredible 34 goals in their first ten league games. Can anybody stop them?
