A bad week for Deportivo, a
0-3 defeat at the hands of Sporting on Sunday evening coming on the back of a
similar loss against CSKA Moscow in the UEFA Cup. Some 5,000 visiting fans
turned one end of the Riazor stadium in to a sea of red and white, and they saw
their side take the lead when Barral was brought down by Lopo and converted the
resulting penalty midway through the first half.
Lopo was at fault again four
minutes later when he failed to cut out Barral's cross, allowing Carmelo to
slide the ball in to the net for Sporting's second. And a few minutes later he
was left by himself in the middle of defence after Colotto was sent off for
holding back Barral in a quick counter-attack, a harsh decision by referee
Teixeira Vitienes.
Depor didn't react at first
though, and Aranzubia had to be on his toes after the restart to keep out
Morán and Diego Castro. Cuéllar was finally called upon to save
from Guardado, Lafita missed the target and Mista had a goal ruled out for a
borderline offside. But with six minutes to go Castro latched on to a pass from
Camacho and fired a shot low in to the net. It was a third win in a row for the
Asturians, and they move level with their opponents in the table.
