Sevilla are up to second
spot, ahead of Villarreal on goal difference, after beating local rivals
Almería 0-1 in the last match of Sunday evening. With all four strikers
injured Manolo Jiménez was forced to put out a makeshift side, Acosta
drafted in at centre forward. And he could have got his name on the scoresheet
early on had Diego Alves not been on his toes. After that though chances were
few and far between, with Duscher firing a shot over the top and the locals not
responding until Negredo tested Palop three minutes before the break.
Adriano drove another effort
over the crossbar at the start of the second half, and five minutes later he
opened the scoring, firing a first time volley past the keeper after the
defence had headed out Maresca's corner. Almería finally woke up, Corona
missing the target and Julio Alvarez curling a free kick just wide of the post.
Jesús Navas should have scored a second goal though when both broke free
with only the keeper to beat, the winger trying to cross to Acosta rather than
try a shot himself. And substitute Armenteros also tried his luck with a late
header which went just wide.
Sevilla had clocked up
another three points though for their fifth win in a row, their best ever start
to a season. And Palop has also set a new record, 495 minutes without letting
in a goal. They will take some beating this year! |
