Valencia moved two points
clear at the top of the table after a 4-0 victory over Numancia, equalling
their best ever start to the season (set by Rafa Benítez in the 2003/4
season). David Villa put them ahead early on, running on to score past Juan
Pablo after his first effort was blocked by a defender and the rebound came
back off the face of Morientes, who was lying groggy on the ground as the
players celebrated.
Villa had a second strike
ruled out for a dubious offside a few minutes later, and Juan Pablo did well to
keep out Fernandes before the break. Gorka Brit went close for the visitors a
couple of times either side of the interval, but Mata made it two midway
through the second half, touching the ball past the keeper after a defender
played it in to his path trying to cut out Villa's cross.
After that it was one way
traffic, Vicente getting a third after picking up a pass from Mata on the far
post and volleying into the net. And with a minute to go Villa wrapped things
up after running on to a high pass from Manuel Fernandes to lob the ball over
the head of the keeper, in off the post. Valencia are on a roll, and with
results elsewhere going against them, Numancia find themselves at the bottom of
the table. |
