Racing Santander rounded off a good week after qualifying for the league stage of the UEFA Cup on Thursday, the Cantabrians climbing out of the drop zone after a last minute 0-1 victory at Osasuna. Both sides were looking for their first league win of the season, and the locals came close to scoring when Roversio headed a corner against the bar early on. But with a few minutes to go to half time they were left with ten men when Plasil was sent off for blocking a free kick with his arm in the defensive wall. Ricardo saved Garay's spot kick however, and then reacted quickly to block his follow up header.

Both keepers were in action after the restart, Ricardo saving from Lacen and Toño keeping out Masoud and Delporte. The ten men defended stoutly though, and the game appeared to be heading for a draw when Marcano got free down the left wing and crossed in for Valera to head what was to prove the only goal. A sad end after a brave fight, and Ziganda's side are only out of the relegation spots thanks to a better goal difference than Numancia and Recreativo.
