Espanyol's good start to the season took a step back with a 2-0 defeat at Sevilla, the first of the so called "four sharks". The systematic calendar has thrown together games against Sevilla, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Villarreal, and the Catalans are now going through the gauntlet.

Tintin Márquez rested several of his key players for next Saturday's derby match against Barcelona, and his side paid the price, with Kanouté having a goal disallowed for a borderline offside, and Kameni saving well from Jesús Navas.

Luis García went close for the visitors a couple of times before the break, but early in the second half Maresca was quickest to react after the ball ballooned off the foot of Diego Capel, his header squeezing in between Kameni and the post.

Luis Fabiano came close to scoring a second when Kameni tipped his free kick around the post, but with four minutes to go substitute Chevantón wrapped things up when he latched on to a Navas cross to score his side's second.
