Last week's leaders
Atlético Madrid were knocked off their pedestal on Saturday evening,
Javier Aguirre's team losing 2-1 to a Valladolid side who played over three
quarters of the match with ten men. The coach left Agüero and
Forlán out of the line up after their long trips to South America during
the week, but they went behind in only the third minute when Coupet misread
Alvaro Rubio's free kick, Vivar Dorado bundling the ball in to the net.
It could have been more soon
afterwards, Ujfalusi clearing away from Goitom and Sesma shooting over the bar.
But Maniche and Luis García went close, and things appeared to swing in
Atlético's favour when Pedro López was sent off, referee Medina
Cantalejo giving him a second booking for diving in the area. However soon
afterwards the locals were awarded a penalty after Perea and Assunçao
pulled over Vivar Dorado, and Javier Baraja drove home the spot kick.
Aguirre had no choice but to
turn to Agüero at the break, and Simao came close to scoring a couple of
times in the second half. Sesma put a good chance over the top at the other
end, but Agüero got one back soon afterwards, turning the ball past Asenjo
after the young keeper could only push out Maniche's shot. Atlético
threw everything forward after that, Miguel in particular forcing Asenjo into
an important save, but they couldn't prevent their first defeat of the season
in a ground where they have not won now in twelve seasons. |
