Two of Spain's UEFA representatives Racing Santander and Sevilla shared the points in their first game of the season. Both sides got off to a cautious start, the only real chance in the first half a penalty for the home side after Squillaci tripped Lacen, Palop diving low to save the spot kick from Olympic gold medal winner Garay.

Both keepers were in action though early in the second half, Palop saving from Tchite and Toño palming out a cross-come-shot from Kanouté and then stopping a dangerous header from Squillaci.

With twenty minutes to go Sevilla took the lead, Luis Fabiano picking up a headed clearance from Marcano to the left of goal and beating Toño with an angled shot. But five minutes later the Cantabrians equalised on a rapid counter attack, substitute Juanjo getting on the end of Serrano's cross to steer a header past Palop. A fair result in the end, and both teams are off the mark.
