Second Division A - Day 33

None of the top three played on Saturday, although all will be happy with the day's results after the four chasing sides all failed to win. Fourth placed Real Sociedad could only draw 1-1 at Celta, Díaz de Cerio scoring for the Basque side late in the first half after Lequi had headed the Galicians into the lead. And there was a similar result between Tenerife and Elche, Oscar Pérez putting the Canary Islanders ahead but getting himself sent off before Cobo equalised for the visitors from the penalty spot.

Hércules took advantage to join the fray with a 1-0 win over Castellón, Sendoa scoring early on against their regional rivals. And Eibar are also in the top half of the table after a 0-1 victory at Córdoba, Codina getting a late goal to leave the Andalusians within four points of the drop zone. Elsewhere Xerez moved to within a point of safety after drawing 1-1 at Granada 74, Viqueira scoring for the visitors before Javi Guerra made it all square after the break. (12.04.08)

The three sides currently occupying the promotion spots all played on Sunday lunchtime, with leaders Numancia picking up a valuable point in a 1-1 draw at Sevilla Atlético. Juanjo appeared to have won it for the locals when he turned in Salva Sevilla's free kick midway through the second half, but Julio Alvarez equalised with another free kick four minutes from the end. Second placed Málaga closed to within seven points of Numancia, but more importantly they distanced themselves by eight points from Sporting Gijón after a 3-2 victory over the Asturians. Diego Castro gave the visitors the lead on the quarter hour mark, but Baha headed the equaliser just a minute later. Antonio Hildago and Gerardo added two more after the restart, and an injury time goal from Sporting's Hidalgo came too late to change the result.

With the top issues all decided, it was left to the clubs in the lower reaches to play on Sunday evening. Alavés came from a goal down to beat bottom side Poli Ejido 2-1, Igor Martínez and Mena getting the goals late in the second half to overturn Usero's early goal and take the Vitoria based side thee points clear of the drop zone. And Las Palmas stay a point above them in the table after coming from two down to draw 2-2 at Salamanca, Cristian Fernández and Adrián scoring in the last ten minutes after David Rodríguez had beaten Santamaría twice in the first half (albeit that the young keeper saved a penalty beforehand).

Albacete are deeper in trouble though after losing 2-1 at Cádiz. Miguel gave the locals a first minute lead, but Barkero equalised on the half hour mark after César was sent off after giving away a penalty. Abraham Paz won it though with a second penalty after the break to give a first victory to caretaker boss Raúl Procopio, who could now stay on to the end of the season after the first choice replacements for Antonio Calderón turned them down. Albacete are now a point behind Gimnàstic, who also stay in the relegation spots after they could only draw 0-0 at home to Racing Ferrol. (13.04.08)
