Only three games in the
second division on Saturday, none involving the top teams. Tenerife
moved to within four points of the promotion spots after a 1-0 win over
Alavés, ending a run of two defeats in a row. Marc Bertrán
got the only goal in the tenth minute of the first half after ex Tenerife
keeper Bernardo could only parry a header from Juanma. Nino hit the post before
that and went close a couple of times afterwards, but in the end the local fans
were calling for the final whistle as the visitors came back. It was a bad
result though for visiting coach José María Salmerón, who
was in charge for the first time since taking over from caretaker manager Julio
Bañuelos midweek, and his side could end the weekend in the bottom four
if results go against them on Sunday.
Córdoba are up
to mid-table after a 0-2 victory at neighbours Granada 74, who have not
won now in five matches. Cristian Alvarez and Ito went close for the visitors
before Juanlu beat Jaime with a shot from outside of the area in the twelfth
minute. Córdoba were left with ten men when Arthuro picked up a second
booking eight minutes from the end, but only two minutes later Cristian Alvarez
got their second with a well struck free kick.
Further down the table
Racing Ferrol and Albacete drew 1-1, a result which kept the
Galicians out of the relegation spots but left their opponents still down in
second from last place. Both goals came after the break, Manuel turning a shot
from Kike into his own net on the hour mark, and Jonathan Pereira depriving the
visitors' new coach Maximo Hernández of a first victory with a shot into
the top corner of the net just three minutes from the end. (01.03.08)
Sporting Gijón
beat leaders Numancia 1-0 on Sunday lunchtime to consolidate third
spot. Honours were even early on, but Bilic tested Nuñez with a free
kick and then set up Kike Mateo to score what was to be the only goal a few
minutes before the break. The Soria based side had not lost away all season
though, and they could have saved a point after the restart when the referee
turned down a penalty for hands by Sastre in the area, and then when Jorge
cleared Julio Alvarez's shot off the line with the keeper beaten.
Sevilla Atlético
moved up to fourth pending the evening matches after a 2-1 win over
Eibar. They made hard work of it though, despite the fact that the
Basque side were down to ten men for the last hour after Raúl
García was sent off for a second bookable offence before the interval.
Alfaro finally made the breakthrough a quarter of an hour in to the second half
after a good team move, and Salva Sevilla got the second with eight minutes to
go from Alfaro's cross. Javi Varas had to save a late penalty from Txiki though
to prevent a last minute comeback.
A surprise on Sunday
evening, where second placed Málaga were held to a 1-1 draw by
bottom club Poli Ejido. The home side totally dominated the first half
against their regional rivals, but they were unable to find a way through a
well ordered defence. López Muñiz made two changes at half time,
but just three minutes after the restart the visitors went ahead, Juli beating
Goitia from outside of the area with his side's first shot at goal. Eight
minutes later Baha got on the end of Paulo Jorge's cross to head past Bello
Serrans, but Poli held on for only their sixth point away from home.
Real Sociedad stayed
level with third placed Sporting after a 4-2 win over Xerez, although
they are still behind the Asturians on goal difference. Penalties from Xabi
Prieto and Víctor put the Basques two up at the interval, the first
after Aythami handled in the area and the second after Mendoza brought down
Nacho. However leading scorer Yordi got one back with an angled shot midway
through the second half, and Carlos Calvo made it all square four minutes
later. Díaz de Cerio restored the lead though after Prieto set him up
with seven minutes to go, and Garitano headed the fourth from Martí's
corner a couple of minutes later.
Just below Real in the
table, Celta and Elche cancelled each other out in a 2-2 draw.
Jesús Perera scored twice for the Galicians either side of half time,
beating Caballero after latching on to a pass from Fernando Sales for the
first, and heading in Mario Suárez's cross for the second. But two in a
minute midway through the second half saved a point for the David Vidal's side,
Noel-Williams picking up an assist from Víctor to beat Esteban and
Raúl Martín levelling the scores with a shot from outside of the
area.
It was a day for draws
though, with the match between Hércules and Salamanca also
ending 2-2. Quique Martín opened the scoring for the visitors on the
quarter hour mark when Unai Alba dropped a cross at his feet after bumping in
to his own defender, and Català put the visitors two up on the half hour
mark when he headed past the keeper. But a Farinós penalty after Tote
was fouled later in the first half, and a late strike from Sendoa after Pagola
could only beat out a free kick took some pressure off beleaguered coach Andoni
Goikoetxea.
Cádiz and
Castellón drew 1-1, leaving both safely ensconced in mid-table.
Gustavo López scored for the Andalusians on the quarter hour mark after
good work by Kosowski. But Oberman lobbed Contreras to equalise soon after the
restart, and even though the visitors were left with ten men when Aurelio was
sent off for a second bookable offence, the Andalusians were unable to take
advantage. Antonio Calderón's side are unbeaten now in five games,
although four of those have been draws.
Elsewhere
Gimnàstic climb out of the relegation spots to the detriment of
Alavés after a 2-0 victory over Las Palmas. Jandro got the first
from the penalty spot on the hour mark after Moisés and Calle were both
fouled in the area at the same time. The visitors had Samuel sent off for a
second bookable offence late on, but even so Roberto had to tip a shot from
Nauzet on to the post before Moisés nipped in between the keeper and a
defender to wrap things up in injury time. (02.03.08) |
